CHAPTER III
Office and Desktop
OVERVIEW
Nowhere have we become more oblivious to an invasion of plastic and metal furnishings of dubious aesthetic value, than on our desk and around our office. Design page writers and their editors have been feeding us every season with fancy verbiage to persuade us that ugly is really "sleek" and "new", even "award-winning" and "innovative". Fortunately, alot of these machines and gadgets can be put behind closed doors or in a drawer. For the essentials that can't be put out of sight, I try to make them more inspiring to be around, to warm them up with a bit of fine woodworking or embellished metalwork.
The speakers slide down into the sides and a carrying handle flips up
on this desktop music cabinet to make it portable.
Brazilian cherry, brass and Mahogany.
Two old brass clock gears, bits of a French copper lawn chair,
pieces of a chandelier, antique brass buttons, and a heavy bronze flywheel
come together to make the Victorian Rolling Index
The "L" desk has a sliding tray to hold a graphics tablet and an extensive array of cable hardware built into the underside of the top to keep wires organized and out of the way. Pieces of two old quater-sawn Oak university tables went into making it.

An extra long maple keyboard tray attached to
an under-the-desk slider, allows for mousing on the far end.
The aroma of the Napa cork board dissipates with time. It
is 24" by 38".
The desktop sound controller box
for a surround sound system is all about making things look as good as they sound.
The five-foot long, Mahogany and Ipe desk-wall dovetail slider makes it easy to mount and move around small shelves, peripherals, and lcd arms up off the desktop.
Pieces of a carved Indian screen and old glass knobs went into the
East India rolling index
A different sort of Monstrance, this one.
It holds a clock and is
embellished with earrings and whatnot that had fallen out of favor and were
collecting in the bottom of a jewelry box.
